Mosaic Tree

The Learning Tree Mosaic Mt. Airy Learning Tree celebrates 25 years of community-based learning with the installation of the MALT Mosaic on the wall outside Lovett Library on Germantown Ave. This brochure contains celebrated names from the past which have been included in the mosaic, at the base of the tree. Every one of these people was a Mt. Airy, Germantown or Chestnut Hill neighbor. The names were selected from hundreds that could have been included, names of people who lived and worked here, people who made these communities thrive. They are notable exemplars of the rich cultural, economic and ethnic diversity of our neighborhoods. They made our world a better place to live.

"Everything you need to know...
...you can learn under this tree"

These words, inspired by Gordon Parks' extraordinary novel The Learning Tree, have served as one of the guiding principles since the founding of MALT 25 years ago. Another principle is "neighbors teaching neighbors." Now, on the wall of Lovett Library, you can see both of these principles take shape in a beautiful tile mosaic. Look carefully at the base of the tree. There you will find the names of some neighbors from the past, neighbors with many things to teach us.

In the border of the mosaic, you will see names of businesses, families and individuals who have supported Mt. Airy Learning Tree and the creation and installation of this mosaic. You will recognize many of the names from the neighborhood, including MALT founder Barbara Bloom and long-time MALT Board members Susan Beetle, Bill Ewing, Rob Harting, Pat Henning and Gayl Koster. You will also find all four MALT directors to date: Barbara Bloom, Sue Davis, Fran Johnston and Jonna Naylor. Thanks to all for supporting this mosaic and thanks to YOU for supporting MALT!
